Numerous laser hair removal and light hair removal sources have been demonstrated to be effective in hair reduction, including alexandrite, Nd-YAG, ruby, diode, and intense pulsed light (IPL). The authors noticed that there were not many comparative studies.
Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Schmults treated five women ages 32 to 45 with Fitzpatrick skin types I-III. The subjects Axilla and/or bikini were treated on one side with Lumenis EpiLight and on the other side with the Palomar EsteLux. The doctors performed four treatments at two or three-week intervals. Hairs were counted by a unbiased observer at one three an five months after the fourth treatment.
Dr Goldberg and Dr. Schmults concluded that both IPLs were safe and effective for Fitzpatric skin types I-III. The EpiLight may be faster, reducing significantly more hair after the second treatment than the EsteLux, but five months after the treatment, the haircount was very similar with an overall reduction of 43% and 41% respectively.
